The emotional turmoil that arises from the resentment & envy teenage girls feel is like a geyser! The language too that the characters use is subtly but noticeably more aggressive than that used by the characters in the 'Goosebumps' series.

Also as was the case in 'Call Waiting', 'Halloween Night' deals with the state of mind of the characters & touches on mental health, rather than retreating to the fun, make-believe world of magic & cryptids.

'Halloween Night' too featured a lot of the standard fare from Stine: an annoying younger sibling, frustrating parents who don't understand the protagonist, & a lot of characters with a penchant for practical jokes. The first one I read was 'Call Waiting', which I finished in four days & already wrote a review on.

Stine (save for a couple of the TV episodes & the movie starring Jack Black), I decided this Halloween season to see what other books by Stine I could find on. I first read the title of this book 25 years ago in the "About the Author" section of 'Deep Trouble', which I borrowed from the school library at Hanna Primary. The wireless audience was fooled to a considerable extent in spite of repeated announcements during the broadcast that the drama was purely fictional. A man ran into an Indianapolis church screaming "New York is destroyed. In parts of Atlanta, Georgia, the inhabitants thought the end of the world had arrived. In some cases people told the police and newspapers that they had seen the "invasion". The entire audience leapt to its feet and the cinema emptied within a few minutes. Reports of a gas attack spread so quickly in New Jersey because of the broadcast that doctors and nurses offered their services and hospitals treated many people for "shock".Ī man burst into a cinema at Orange, New Jersey, shouting warnings. Residents of New Jersey covered their faces with wet cloths as a protection against poisonous gases and fled their homes carrying their most valuable possessions. Thousands of telephone calls poured into the wireless station and police headquarters.

Many people tuning in to the middle of the broadcast jumped to the conclusion that there was a real invasion. Martians were also observed moving towards New York. Then there was an account of how the meteor opened and Martian warriors emerged and began killing local citizens with mysterious death-rays. The music was resumed, but was soon interrupted again for a report that a meteor had struck New Jersey. The programme began with music by a New York City hotel dance band, which was interrupted suddenly by a Columbia news announcer who reported that violent flashes on Mars had been observed by Princeton University astronomers.
